The Chamber Strings of Melbourne continues to offer the opportunity for young string players to present exciting and challenging repertoire.

The CSM’s (now traditional) first performance for the year was again at historic St Francis Catholic Church in Melbourne on Sunday 31 March. CSM accompanied the Choir of Francis in the Easter Sunday Mass, and various liturgical works. The major work was Schubert’s beautiful Mass in C Major D452. For this performance we were joined by Tony Way (Director of Music), organist Anthony Halliday and the St Francis Choir, as well as soloists Merlyn Quaife, Sally Anne Russell, and Peter Mander.

On Sunday 19th May CSM  performed a special subscription concert dedicated to the memory of our former Chairperson Professor Nancy Millis AC and The Friends of the CSM. The concert, at 2.30pm took place at the magnificent Christ Church South Yarra and was followed by a post-concert reception. Program featured Edward Elgar’s Serenade for Strings in E minor, Op. 20,  Jean Sibelius’ Andante Festivo (1938 Version), Dag Wirén’s Serenade for Strings Opus 11,  Percy Grainger’s  Molly on the Shore and Irish Tune from Derry. The 2012 program covered a wide range of repertoire including works from the world of concerto grossi, to that of the stage and screen.

2012 saw collaborations with THE TEAM OF PIANISTS to showcase two exceptionally talented young pianists making their mark on Melbourne’s music scene – VICTOR HU and KEVIN KANESIUS SUDERMAN playing Bach and Chopin in Genazzano’s spectacular new Concert Hall, the Madeleine Centre.

The orchestra was again invited to give a concert at the wonderful UPPER YARRA ARTS CENTRE, and what has become a tradition, joined the St Francis Choir for High Mass on Easter Day, and returned to present an afternoon concert at the Port Phillip Village.

To end the year on a festive note, Chamber Strings of Melbourne joined with several alumni and members of the Royal Melbourne Philharmonic Orchestra for a Gala Concert at the spectacular BMW Edge Federation Square, in a concert of Christmas Classics including Vaughan Williams rarely heard cantata “The First Nowell”, and much-loved “Fantasia on Christmas Carols”, and Corelli’s famous “Christmas Concerto”.  The concert was performed in association with Box Hill Chorale.
